Adventures in Sammich Making!


So for those of you who don't know him, this is my boyfriend Travis. He is a former Ringling Bros. clown, and current middle school teacher. He loves theatre, photography, pub trivia, and chai lattes. He hates coffee, off-brand cereal, and the crust on his bread. And speaking of crust, this guy loves sandwiches, or sammiches as he likes to call him. He likes either a chicken breast or meatball sub from Subway, a French Dip from Arby's, and a Pastrami sandwich from Pogi's, but for lunch he likes a good old fashioned PB&J. Except, for with this guy no ordinary peanut butter and jelly sandwich will do. He has to have a specific kind of peanut butter, a specific kind of jelly, and a specific kind of bread. Occasionally he likes honey on his sandwiches, but right now he is into pear butter. And don't even get me started on the proportions! He likes equal parts peanut butter and honey, equal parts peanut butter and jelly, but double the amount of pear butter to peanut butter. The bread has to be just fresh enough that it is still soft, but firm enough to be able to spread the peanut butter, and he likes his sandwiches to be made in the morning as opposed to the night before because otherwise he claims they are "day old." He gets up early every morning to play video games, and he likes a sandwich and a chai, as well as a sandwich for lunch. Most important though is the crust. Travis hates crust and whenever I tell him to eat his crust because it is the best tasting and most healthy part of the bread (which it is) he tells me "I don't have to eat the crust if I don't want to. Ask my mom!" Any yes his mom confirms this because she also doesn't eat the crust. So he was overjoyed when he discovered a sandwich cutter at the grocery store in the shape of a butterfly. He says he only likes it because it cuts the crust off the bread, but he bought a matching butterfly sandwich holder to take his sandwich to work every day.



This may not sound like a lot of work, but if you knew this guy you would know that making his sandwiches "just right" is a full time job. He likes them a particular way and if I don't meet his specifications I hear about it! He'll say things like, "You know today's sandwich was good, but there wasn't enough honey. I like it when the honey crystalizes. The honey didn't crystalize today", or "You know the bread was a little hard. It made it difficult to enjoy my sandwich." His version of constructive criticism. Of course this is all in fun. He's really not the sandwich nazi that I am making him out to be. He appreciates when I make sandwiches for him and I enjoy it as well. If you knew this guy you would know that he is worth all of this sandwich madness. I also like to leave little notes on his sandwich case with jokes, riddles, and nice messages. Yesterday he came home and told me that my note had left him uninspired. Geesh! Too much pressure!
