Oscar Sunday!

Today is Oscar Sunday! It is my absolute favorite day of the year and I am taking the whole day off to enjoy it! I'm not even going to let myself feel guilty about it. When I had a job I requested the day off every year and everyone laughed at me... you all have your Super Bowl, but today is my day! Anyways, as I do every year I watched all the movies and I am going to share my Oscar predictions.

I think Argo is going to take it this year! The whole rest of the show will either all go to Les Mis or all go to Lincoln, but I think Argo is going to surprise us all. It was such an intense movie! The acting was great, and Ben Affleck is a wonderful director! To those of you who haven't seen it Argo F&%k Yourself! (Those of you who have seen Argo know what this means. If you don't go watch the film. I promise I'm not insulting you.)

This category makes me mad because I want Hugh Jackman to win so badly! Have you seen Le Mis? He totally deserves it... but it's going to go to Daniel Day Lewis. His portrayal of Abraham Lincoln was beyond amazing! He has got to be one of the greatest living actors of our time. I did not feel like I was watching a movie! I felt like I was watching Lincoln pass the 13th Amendment. It's a shame because this will be his third Oscar and Hugh has never won, but if you are in a category with Daniel Day Lewis you don't stand a chance. Denzel Washington was insane in Flight by the way! Do yourself a favor and see it. Why John Goodman wasn't nominated, I'll never know.

I don't think she deserves it for this movie and I don't think she's paid her dues, but whatever. Jessica Chastain is the next big it girl by the way.

This is the first year that I have watched all the animated films and I really enjoyed them all. I hope ParaNorman wins because it was made in Portland, but I think it'll go to Frankenweenie. 

I also predict that Seth McFarland will suck as an Oscar host, that winners will talk way past the music, that Jessica Chastain will be one of the best dressed, Joaquin Pheonix will not shave, and Daniel Day Lewis will no doubt be in some awful velvet suit. Now I am off to party it up with Joan and Melissa for the red carpet pre-show, and then on to the main event! Happy Oscar day everyone!

Reality...

It is only the end of January and already I have broken my New Year's Resolution to blog every week. That's the thing about New Year's Resolutions... You make them around the end of December when you are still riding the holidays wave, and you forget how busy you are the rest of the year. To be fair I have been really busy and not much in the way of new and exciting has been happening. Law school is in full swing. I'm not sure if it is because I am now used to the workload, or because the subjects are easier, or the professors are nicer, or whatever, but this semester feels a lot less stressful than the last one. Don't get me wrong. I am still CRAZY busy, but I don't feel panickey all the time, and sometimes I think maybe... just maybe... I might survive this and make it out of here with a JD. This semester I am also applying for jobs for over the summer. I need some legal experience and some money would be nice too. It's a little bit scary learning how to interview, and network, and write resumes and cover letters, and just the idea that I may actually have a job where I don't have to walk around wearing other people's food is blowing my mind. I feel like the little girl in the car commercial who's dad is warning her to be safe on the road, but really she is a grownup. I love that commercial! Anyways, I have a few interviews lined up so fingers crossed that I make a good impression. I promise to update this thing when something new and exciting comes along. Until then I'll just be taking it day by day.

A Much Needed Break & Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone! I have not posted in a while because after my last post it was time for finals and then it was Christmas break and I could not force myself to do anything academic, even adding a new blog post. Even now I find myself having a hard time staying focused on what I am writing, but school starts back up in a few days and I want to take some time to reflect on my much needed Christmas break. I used Christmas break to play catch up. I caught up on sleep...

and with friends and family. I took the train to Seattle to see one of my oldest and dearest friends in the whole world Markus. We had not seen each other in almost two years and it was time to rectify that.

  Markus is just one of those people that I know will always be in my life. We met in college and have been friends ever since. Whenever we see each other it is like no time has passed and we pick up right where we left off. I also got a chance to catch up with my wonderful Kindred Spirit Sarah Wilson.

Sarah Wilson is another friend from college and she is my kindred spirit. She recently got engaged so it was fun to get together and discuss WEDDING PLANS!!! She is also one of my closest friends and I am so happy that I get to be a bridesmaid in her wedding and help her celebrate her big day! I also got the chance to catch up with my friend Jennifer and Travis and I got to spend the evening with Al, an old travel buddy of ours (sadly no pictures). Then it was off to Pittsburgh for Christmas with Travis's family.

Travis's sister, brother-in-law, nieces, and nephew moved to Pittsburgh this summer and we thought it would be fun to fly in on Christmas Eve and surprise them, and boy were they surprised! Misty and Thomas knew we were coming of course, but you should have seen the look on the kid's faces when they saw us. Christmas in Pittsburgh was a blast! It snowed the day after Christmas and we had a great time sledding, throwing snowballs, and building snowmen. These are not things that we get to do very often in Portland.

Christmas break was awesome and I'll be sad to see it go, but it's time to get back to work on my law degree. Last year my New Years Resolution was to get into law school, and I accomplished that. This year my New Years Resolution is to enjoy the journey and not focus so much on the destination. In 2 1/2 short years I will be a lawyer and I will look back on my time in law school as some of the best days of my life. Its hard work, but I know that someday it will pay off. My goal for 2013 is to update this blog at least once a week. I hope I can stick to it. Happy New Year!

Adventures in Sammich Making!

So for those of you who don't know him, this is my boyfriend Travis. He is a former Ringling Bros. clown, and current middle school teacher. He loves theatre, photography, pub trivia, and chai lattes. He hates coffee, off-brand cereal, and the crust on his bread. And speaking of crust, this guy loves sandwiches, or sammiches as he likes to call him. He likes either a chicken breast or meatball sub from Subway, a French Dip from Arby's, and a Pastrami sandwich from Pogi's, but for lunch he likes a good old fashioned PB&J. Except, for with this guy no ordinary peanut butter and jelly sandwich will do. He has to have a specific kind of peanut butter, a specific kind of jelly, and a specific kind of bread. Occasionally he likes honey on his sandwiches, but right now he is into pear butter. And don't even get me started on the proportions! He likes equal parts peanut butter and honey, equal parts peanut butter and jelly, but double the amount of pear butter to peanut butter. The bread has to be just fresh enough that it is still soft, but firm enough to be able to spread the peanut butter, and he likes his sandwiches to be made in the morning as opposed to the night before because otherwise he claims they are "day old." He gets up early every morning to play video games, and he likes a sandwich and a chai, as well as a sandwich for lunch. Most important though is the crust. Travis hates crust and whenever I tell him to eat his crust because it is the best tasting and most healthy part of the bread (which it is) he tells me "I don't have to eat the crust if I don't want to. Ask my mom!" Any yes his mom confirms this because she also doesn't eat the crust. So he was overjoyed when he discovered a sandwich cutter at the grocery store in the shape of a butterfly. He says he only likes it because it cuts the crust off the bread, but he bought a matching butterfly sandwich holder to take his sandwich to work every day.

This may not sound like a lot of work, but if you knew this guy you would know that making his sandwiches "just right" is a full time job. He likes them a particular way and if I don't meet his specifications I hear about it! He'll say things like, "You know today's sandwich was good, but there wasn't enough honey. I like it when the honey crystalizes. The honey didn't crystalize today", or "You know the bread was a little hard. It made it difficult to enjoy my sandwich." His version of constructive criticism. Of course this is all in fun. He's really not the sandwich nazi that I am making him out to be. He appreciates when I make sandwiches for him and I enjoy it as well. If you knew this guy you would know that he is worth all of this sandwich madness. I also like to leave little notes on his sandwich case with jokes, riddles, and nice messages. Yesterday he came home and told me that my note had left him uninspired. Geesh! Too much pressure!
